Hi. I have 2 videos of different cartoons, and I was ondering if anyone could make heads or tales of them. Here is the first.

To be honest, I didn't even know you could store six hours of cartoons on a single video tape.

Anyway, judging from the cover, that looks like another PD video. I'm sure Walky Talky Hawky is on it (since it's the only Foghorn Leghorn cartoon in the public domain). But are there any Tweety cartoons in the PD?

Actually, the only Foghorn included in this PD tapes is "Crowing Pains".

You can store 6 hours on a video tape in the EP/SLP mode (and the picture looks terrible). Also, I believe some of Bob Clampett's Tweety cartoons are in the PD.

"A Tale of Two Kitties" is PD.
Freleng's "Gift Wrapped" is included on some PD tapes, though I believe it is not actually PD.

As far as I know, none of the post-48's are PD. In fact, Crowing Pains might be the most recent WB cartoon in the public domain. My mistake for thinking Walky-Talky Hawky was in the PD (I meant Crowing Pains).

Well.. these have some weird stuff on them, and the quality varies. I can't dig it out to check now, because I am moving. But i seem to remember, Jasper and the Haunted house, The Cobweb Hotel a few Supermans and.... A UNCENSORED VERSION OF FRESH HARE, in good quality too!

The one I have is a 6 hour cartoon tape in a slide-thru carboard cover- no top flap. I got it at K-Mart in the mid to late 80s. Will have to dig it out.

The "zingers" on it were a half dozen or so "Russian" fairy tale toons with elaborate animation and a couple of Italian or French cartoons. (One was UPA-ish animation of a kid at the beach with a curvacious lady!)

A friend referred to them as "Nutty Squirrel" cartoons, as he recognized them from 60s TV showings along side of actual NUTTY SQUIRREL cartoons. They were from "Flamingo Studios" or some such distributor. Historical info found on the NUTTY cartoon showings indeed mentions them.

Wow... I just located it! 50 FUNNY CARTOON CLASSICS- was $9.97 at Kmart.

Mighty Mouse- Daffy Duck- Popeye- Little Lulu- Tweety- Parrots- Casper- Bugs Bunny- 3 Little Pigs- Herman- Superman- Woody Woodpecker- Heckyll and Jekyl- Raggedy Ann- Mutt and Jeff. (Will see if I have a better track listing.)

Just yesterday at Goodwill- I saw a VHS box set- bigger than a a shoebox- full of 10 or 12 VHS tapes of PD cartoons in an illustrated wraparound box- but no individual sleeves. All the usual suspects- I bet each tape didn't run an hour. I bet it didn't hold as many toons at any 2 of the 12, "600 cartoon" dvds. It was $5.00 and had no individual track listing. I couldn't see hauling it home. I may check again if it's there on half-price day!

So that's where VHS goes to die: the Goodwill graveyard. Rest in peace, old magnetic analog technology.

(One was UPA-ish animation of a kid at the beach with a curvacious lady!) I believe that is a French Cartoon titled "Mr. Rossi At The Beach"

And Goodwill is where PD collectors like myself and Mike Matei go to save them!
Dr Mark: Is yours the one with a fat porky in a blue sweater on the cover? A tweety with an overly large head? It's one I had as a kid, lost the sleeve, and have been looking for a replacement ever since.

Hi Tom, No mine sleeve is an orange background with 8 character heads in a circle of hearts. I seem to recall there were two at the time I made my purchase and though there were no title listings- I chose only one.

Sadly, that big box set of PD VHS was gone from the Goodwill. But it was freshly stocked with quite a bunch of 80s pd stuff. I don't collect them for the covers. I only get them if they had video material I don't have or not on DVD.

The only one that stood out was a GRAMPY collection of 4 recolored cartoons-
2 I think are out in b/w. 2 titles I didn't recognize- one was "The Dancing Bear"... But i just couldn't get fired up over recolored ones and left it there.

I presume you have the 80s tapes analyzed pretty well... are there any 80s PD tapes that have truly rare titles on them that have not resurfaced in the "Dollar DVD" era??? Ones to look for?

I'll work on posting some pics of the PD toon tapes I have.

Gah! I have that Grampy tape but mine is covered in stickers...if you go back there and see it again, I say pick it up!
Probably all of the 80s pd cartoons have made their way onto the DVDs...but IMHO, these modern collections are colder in comparison. There's something special about the half hour tapes with weird cover art. Somehow we could appreciate each individual cartoon a little bit more because there was just less going around. Everything is done in excess today (even though I completely support the release of comprehensive cartoon collections- don't get me wrong!!)
The orange 50 cartoon tape is the more common of the two.

It seems to post pics here, they need to be posted offsite and linked in... So, in search of webspace, I have a seldom used blog where I posted some pics of my rarest PD VHS tapes and the index card with the complete track listing of the 6-hour, 50 CARTOON COLLECTION I bought at Kmart c.1990.

I hope this works... I uploaded LARGE images, so they can be blown up if needed.
