View Full Version : Mr. Magoo Makes a Return of Sorts...
Expect to see Mr. Magoo animated once again in a new feature film.
And for some reason he's learned a new skill....?
"Kung Fu Magoo" will be getting a theatrical release in Mexico next year with a DVD release in North America.

Really. No word of a lie. It's not April, so it can't be an April Fools' joke.

Yup, I remember hearing about this back in Jan. (here's the old thread (http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com/showthread.php?t=10564&highlight=Kung+Magoo) with a piece of promotional art and word of upcoming video game tie-ins for the Nintendo Wii...)

This I dont understand..Magoo can't see...How does he become a kung fu Master?..Another question, has anyone else done the voice of Magoo since Jim Backus?

The recently-deceased Greg Burson did Magoo's voice during the opening titles of the (disastrous) 1997 live-action Mister Magoo feature film with Leslie Nielsen as Magoo (and as much as I love and treasure Mr. Nielsen, even he couldn't save that horrible movie for me. Sadly, this new film doesn't look like an improvement.).

A Wii game?? You score points for bumping into furniture and accidentally flinging your remote at the TV? I'll pass.

A twelve year old nephew named Justin? What about Waldo? From a writer's and editor's point of view—the writers here have obviously decided that viewers can't identify with the clumsy, bombastic Magoo, so need a more sympathetic character through whose eyes to view the story. Giving Magoo a young, smarter nephew would seem to be the equivalent of adding a figure similar to, say, Donald Duck's nephews as depicted in the comics.
By contrast, Waldo is a rather dopey geek. I like him, but could I take an hour-long movie in which he was the identification figure?
From a Magoo fan's point of view—if the only way to do Magoo in a full-length film is create a major supporting character from scratch, then I don't think Magoo belongs in a full-length film, or at least the one you want to tell. What's new, Mary Sue?

I think the perfect thing they did with Magoo outside of his cartoon shorts, was "The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo" (and Magoo's Christmas Carol, which was sort of a pilot for Famous Adventures). He played various fictional characters from literature..And, for the most part, his nearsightedness wasnt an issue in the stories. Too bad it only lasted one season..

I have a feeling 0% of these people have ever seen a Magoo short, because they usually feature Magoo.

That..Was..Horrendous..I usually try to give everything new at least a chance, but that was just..plain..bad..
Very telling that the only actual Mr. Magoo footage they showed in the preview is film from his 60's TV cartoons, and a small bit from What's New, Mr. Magoo..

It never ends, does it? The constant degrading revivals of classic cartoon characters is one consistent aspect of life, like death and taxes.

Yeesh, I haven't even gave the Mr. Magoo cartoons a chance, and yet, I know THIS will be bad.
Personally, I don't know what's worse. The fact those twins from TSLZAC (it's best you don't know what that means) are in this (and my sister will eat this up), or the fact the character himself will be screw up.
Sheesh, first Yogi, then this, then the Pink Pather, who's next, Woody?

Stranger still, that project might actually work.

Yeah, I know what show you're talking about. The poorly made show with those two twins who are pale live-action version of Chip n' Dale or Heckle and Jeckle. I doubt those guys would even know the later, and somewhat know the former. Personally, I want the pesky chipmunks and all the rest of the mouse's friend back on TV. And I don't mean those CG robot made from the planet Nudnik. (Bunny Snatchers reference).
As for the new film, I think the company who's doing this movie just blew most of their budget on it. Sorry, no sale, doc.
