Has Warner Home Video given up on Popeye volume 2 replacement disc 1 discs? I still haven't gotten my replacement Popeye volume 2, disc 1 yet. I believe I called Warners June 16 or 17, somewhere in there. It's been almost 4 months, nothing. Anybody else on here get theirs yet? Popeye volume 3 is 3 1/2 weeks away. What's going on?

Nope haven't gotten mine either. Haven't heard anything.

The last I heard was that there would be a delay... apparently the discs are still not yet in stock. Whether or not that means that they haven't yet been manufactured, I don't know. When I called WHV back in June to place my order, the representative told me then that I would receive my disc near the end of September. I'll have to look up the toll-free number and call them again to see what's going on...

Sorry for a gratuitous bump, but has anybody heard further about this issue? (I haven't yet heard thing one either.) Perhaps it's now time to break out the snail mail supplies...!

If we all decide(WE= customers who are unhappy about not getting the replacement disc) not to buy POPEYE volume 3 until they mail out the discs or give us some price break on volume 3. I cancelled my pre-order at Amazon because I didn't get the replacement disc. But I will buy the set if I find it much cheaper at a used CD-DVD store, which won't help the sales of Warner Home Video if I do find a used copy.

But ... if enough people decide not to purchase Volume 3 through normal retail channels (as mentioned elsewhere, some good price deals can currently be found online), there might not be a Volume 4. (The old folks used to call that "cutting off your nose to spite your face.") I say, let's do all Popeye fans a huge favor and support the new set.

I'm old and I like to like to cut off my head to spite my nose!:> But I'm not doing that! If I get my replacemet disc then WHV will get more of my money!!! Otherwise, I'm going to wait and shop the used cd/dvd stores. Thinking of all the major and minor f**k ups WHV has done on some of these animation sets: LT , Popeye, Droopy, Tom&Jerry, and the new flintstones set , why should I continue to support them over and over especially when I have/own most of these cartoons on VHS tape?

I can only hope the lengthy delay meant Warner took their time with the corrections.

So far from viewing it the titles are correct, but The Jeep still sufferes from that horrible wobble/wave in the picture.

Warner could do what they did for Volume 1 and create synthetic titles, and then mask the Jeep information in the appropriate places (IIRC, only the Paramount mountain and the Popeye card on Jeep suffered from the nitrate shrinkage and wobbly effects.) In fact, why this wasn't done, I don't know (maybe the budgets for these discs was slashed).
FWIW, I made a handy-dandy list of the various issues with the original disc.
Bulldozing the Bull:Part of opening music cut off, Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to correct Popeye card.
Goonland: Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to correct Popeye card, opening music uncut.
A Date to Skate: Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to correct Popeye card, opening music uncut.
Cops is Always Right: Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to correct Popeye card, opening music uncut.
Customers Wanted: Part of opening music cut off, Incorrect Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to incorrect a.a.p. Popeye card
Hello, How Am I?: Part of opening music cut off, Incorrect Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to incorrect a.a.p. Popeye card
It's the Natural Thing to Do:Part of opening music cut off, Incorrect Paramount logo at start jumpcuts to correct Popeye card, several splices in opening music.
How much of this was corrected on the new disc?

From my viewing, only the two shorts that had a.a.p. titles were fixed in any discernable way. The truncated music and jumpcuts are still there on all of them.
"Customers Wanted" had an "Adoph Zukor Presents..." card that fades into the doors opening to reveal the title. Why they didn't lift the "Leave Well Enough Alone" title with the correct "Paramount Presents...," I don't know.
"Hello, How Am I" fares better. Truncated music aside, I had to look very closely over several viewings to catch how they got the "Popeye the Sailor" title card (which I'm guessing was lifted from "It's the Natural Thing to Do") to fade into the credit slate. Virtually seamless.

Something is better than nothing, to be sure. But it still sucks that Warner did go the whole way in improving the presenation (specially since things like the jumpcuts could have been fixed relatively painlessly.)

I got my replacement disc yesterday but didn't get a chance to watch it until today. So far I've just watched Customers Wanted and Hello, How Am I? because i wanted to see if the a.a.p. titles had been replaced.
I take it, then, that there's still a problem with Customers Wanted? I'm aware of the truncated opening music (the "Sailor's Horn-Pipe" tune normally heard, just before the instrumental "vamp", is missing) on each of these...
My disc was somewhat scratched up; do doubt from having been carelessly shoved into a paper sleeve that was then super-glued between two pieces of cardboard... I nearly tore the paper sleeve and sent the disc flying when I tried opening it! My disc has what appears to be a very small but deep scratch on the play side that may or may not cause mistracking; so I will need to play it from beginning to end to make sure it isn't defective. I'd hate to have to return it to WHV and wait another 2 months for a new one.
In the meantime, while others are still waiting to either receive or view their copy, I've attached some screencaps of the two cartoons that were originally issued with a.a.p. titles (Hello, How Am I? is attached to the next post):

According to Tom's original print, Customers Wanted should have the same mountain and "Paramount Presents" card as seen on Leave Well Enough Alone. The recreation is close enough, but I'm glad Warner took the time and did it right with Volume 3.
Hello, How Am I, seems to be spot on though. They used both the correct Paramount mountain AND "Paramount Presents" card (Not even It's the Natural Thing to Do had the correct mountain

My copy should arrive by Thursday; I received an e-mail from Amazon saying it's been shipped out already...
I, too, thought it was strange that the replacement discs arrived around the same time that Volume 3 was released to stores. In the accompanying letter from Warner Home Video, there's no explanation as to why there was a month-long delay on the replacement discs. It's funny, I was just going to call them this week to find out what was going on...

Yes. If the original titles had listed Adolf Zukor instead of Paramount at the beginning, they never would have been masked by AAP in the first place (and AAP's title recreations for the 1939-55 Popeyes were very precise to match any original credits being hidden, except for the Paramount ones, and the Technicolor/Cinecolor/Polacolor notices on the later Famous shorts).
And just on a side trivia note -- it is interesting that they went back in and used the same lettering style for the word "Paramount" that they had used beginning in 1935 for Zukor's name, instead of the stylized version already in place on the Color Classics even before the studio left New York and which showed up on the Miami Popeyes after the main title redesign (graphic lettering being one place where the Fleischers were usually ahead of what the California animation studios were doing, it's odd they opted for such a boring font here).

It would appear, then, that a.a.p. did their job very well; because the first time I've ever saw that "Paramount Presents" title-card was on the Vol. 2 DVD set. Unfortunately I have never had access to any original prints; all of the Fleischer Popeye cartoons I have ever seen up until recently have been the truncated a.a.p. versions that aired on TV in the 1970's.

Correctomundo. (As a matter of fact, a TRUE recreation could probably be done in AfterEffects of even Windows Movie Maker with the right copy protection-defeating tools)
BTW, according to David Gerstein, "Cops is Always Right" should also have that distinct Paramount mountain. (but with the "Adolph Zukor presents" card)

*Ugh* All of this is making my head swim! I guess at the end of the day, when all is said and done, we should just be grateful to have the Popeye DVD sets, period. After all, there once was a time not too long ago when it seemed like we would never get these cartoons on DVD at all.
For those of us who were weaned on the TV versions of these cartoons; we now have at least a close approximation of how they would have looked when they ran theatrically.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge in all this as I was awaiting the supposed bundle of vol. 2 and 3 in a tin box but am breaking down and want to get both 2 & 3 now. I have searched the forums and this thread but still don't have a clear answer.
1:Is it disc 1, 2, or both that's affected?
2:What's wrong with the disc(s)? Is it only not having the standard, come-to-be generic Paramount title card (as in not the original but that super clean one they use for recreation purposes over and over) and they have AAP instead?
3:If yes to #2, I already have and have seen that on my vol. 1, so what's wrong with having an AAP cut-in original?
4:If I decide to even have the replacement disc, will I have to give up my original disc or does WB still send them to you first? (and yes, I know I'm giving us a bad name by doing this, but I like to keep both the defective and fixed discs. Different digital [bitrate?] consistencies and all.)
Thank you so much.:daffy:

Your #1 and #2 questions are answered in Post 18 in this thread. It's big; you can't miss it.
Yes, they send you the replacement disc first...but, please, return the defective one for two reasons: They have your customer number on record and you may not get future replacements if they don't get discs returned from you. Plus, you're right - you give us all a black eye...and run the risk of all of us having to return our discs FIRST.
Between Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and Popeye...WHV has been very cooperative with us collectors. Let's keep the good relations going. IMHO ;)

So I'm really not happy with how scratched up my replacement disc is. It seems to play but I'm just not happy with the condition it arrived in. I would rather keep the original disc and let them have it back if this is the best I'm going to get. Anyone have any advice on how I should handle this?

So I'm really not happy with how scratched up my replacement disc is. It seems to play but I'm just not happy with the condition it arrived in.
First, I have to say that, despite the best efforts of the US Post Office to bend and mutilate, all my replacement discs from WHV have been in good shape with no scratches.
Step 1: You say it "seems" to play. Pop it into your most -critical- DVD player...the cheapest/oldest player...the one that's unforgiving of even the most minor defect. If there's no problem, be happy...or go to Step 2.
Step 2: Call WHV and tell them the disc came through scratched. It's up to you to answer (truthfully or not) when they ask you if it plays OK. Follow their instructions.
I'm anal about disc condition...but I set the bar at a reasonable level when it comes to light scratches. It's Murphy's Law that you'll get a pristine DVD replacement in the mail, only to have it fall out of your hands...data-side-down...onto your car keys. ;)
I've received lightly scuffed discs in nearly all the Looney Tunes sets and one or two in the Tom & Jerry sets. Life's too short to get too anal if they play flawlessly, IMHO.
