Has anybody here ever seen Mickey's 60th Birthday? I just saw it on you tube, and it is an amazing special. It also seems differtent from other anniversary specials, in that this one seems to focus more on plot than showing old clips (though old clips are shown).
One thing that I find odd is that Goffy doesn't appear in the special (I can't remember if any Goofy clips are shown, but I bet they are). I guess with Roger Rabbit having a big part he basically did what Goofy would have done.
One thing that I noticed is that several existing clips are reused with newly dubbed vocals, making them part of the story as opposed to being presented as clips.
The sorcerer in this special kind of looks like Maurice from Beauty and the Beast.

I still have the 1988 TV special on video tape, but I haven't watched it lately. I recall it featured Roger Rabbit and several then-popular stars of
NBC shows (e.g., the casts of Family Ties and Cheers, Phylicia Rashad of
The Cosby Show, etc). The late John Ritter was on it, too. :mickey: :minnie: :donald:
Carl Reiner (Caesar's Hour, The Dick Van Dyke Show) also appeared. The
plot involved the disappearance of Mickey, and (of course) Donald Duck was a prime suspect! [I don't want to give away any more of the plot for
those who haven't seen it.] :D

Actually, this year is his 80th Birthday; I was wondering if Disney was planning to do anything with it since I hadn't seen or heard anything - which I thought was odd.

They're going to bribe Congress some more to make sure he can celebrate many more birthdays under the company's control! :) :mickey:

I really hope they do something, but I doubt it. This decade, its all about tween pop stars and celebrities to Disney that they're neglecting the classic cartoon stars.

Sad really.
Course I think the best laugh I ever had was seeing a issue of Cracked or one of those that spoofed Mickey's 60th by depicting him as if he was a 60 year old (course you could've told the same joke for his 80th too).

I saw that some time ago on youtube. But I doubt they'll do anything more than release a collectors pin or something for his 80th birthday. I think the Disney company has lost sight of the fact that it was all started with a mouse, something Walt Disney hoped would never happen in a famous quote of his. It's one of the reasons I've lost a lot of respect for that company, at least the way it is these days. It might as well just be called Disney-Pixar.

Indeed?! Well, maybe if the Disney company itself won't do anything to mark this milestone, perhaps the good people at Gemstone Comics could do something appropriate, *ahem* *ahem* *ahem* ;) hopefully??

Disney was becoming a brand name while he was still alive. He was an entrepreneur more than a filmmaker. Being loyal to Disney is the same as being loyal to GE or Ford.

One thing about the special that is interesting is that Donald Duck wasn't meant to be in Mickey Mouse's birthday show (the show within the show, not this special). I wonder why Donald wouldn't have been invited, aside from being an important plot point. Donald was a major character in the Mickey Mouse cartoons, so it'd make sense that Donald (and Minnie, and Goofy, and Pluto) would appear in a birtdhay special about Mickey Mouse.

They probably knew how popular Donald was (Donald was more popular than Mickey from the 40's-80's), so they left him out so he wouldn't take try and take the spotlight.
