View Full Version : Semi-OT: Emmy Nominations

The Emmy Nominations came out recently and it seems like the rules are starting to change in the animation catagory. Apparently, two-or-three parter episodes qualify as "one hour or more" even if they're not nescessarily shown together. Fair enough. South Park's hilarious three-part "Imaginationland", which features some of their best work, is up for the award and easily deserves to win over Family Guy's overhyped and painfully undernourishing Star Wars bore. (Oh, why didn't they choose the vastly superior "Stewie Kills Lois" two-parter?)
I'm still ticked over the way the Emmy's treat the animated shows. Not only do they refuse to announce those nominations on TV, but they aren't even given out during the actual televised ceremony. Nope. They're just not important enough.

Well, I happen to think that the Emmy awards are actually SMART and show the stuff that DOESN'T MAKE MUCH MONEY AT ALL, showing up the Spongebob Squarepants and Family Guys of the world.

Not sure I follow that. What stuff doesn't make much money?

Truer words couldn't have been spoken.
Concerning the other nominees, I think it would be great to see SpongeBob to win an Emmy. (The one it should've won was its 2003 nomination for the entire series.)
But I think King of the Hill has the best shot at winning. Not only because it was a great episode, but the show itself has made a serious comeback after almost getting cancelled a couple years ago.

Personally, my opinion is reverse. I thought the Blue Harvest episode of Family Guy was probably the best episode of Family Guy this season, while Imaginationland falls victim to the same thing that ruined Timmy 2000 and the "Lemmingwinks" episode IMO: an awful sub-plot (in this case, the "Kyle sucks Cartman's dick" crap) bringing down what could have been an excellent episode.

Seconded. Blue Harvest may have simply copied the plot of SW and added FG style jokes, but I really, really got a kick out of it. As a tribute to A New Hope I think the episode worked incredibly well.
Imagionationland, however, was two episodes too long, was full of the so much of the same stuff I got tired of on this show years ago and featured a sub plot that I got sick of by the end of the first episode.
Blue Harvest could have been twice as long and I would have still enjoyed it. Imagionationland, by contrast, only need to be half as long as it actually was.

Sorry, we did a Star Wars parody with Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs ten years ago and we were 20 years too late THEN. I thought the Family Guy episode was very trite and tired.
You're entitled to your opinion, of course. If you enjoyed it, well then, you enjoyed it. So at least it worked for some people, just not for me.

"Star Wars" was a stale subject for parody back when Mel Brooks tried to do it in 1987. Although I've heard some good things about the "Robot Chicken" send-up. Anyone see it?
BTW - I'm glad "King of the Hill" was nominated. That show gets neglected a lot, partly due to the fact that FOX can never decide on a regular time slot for it.

In the case of Spongebob, you CANNOT escape Spongebob WHATSOEVER. Of course, there are a few SBSP cartoons that are okay, but not ALL of them.

I've seen the Robot Chicken Star wars epsidoe, and it was good, though the Family Guy episode was better.

I thought Star Wars was a durable-enough franchise that people could make homages to it or parodies of it without it appearing dated.
However, I believe Family Guy's version is FAR overrated, like the show itself today.

I much prefered Shin-Chan's Star Wars episode.
Then again, I didn't even watch the other two.

...and I don't think it will be Fat Guy's...er, Family Guy's "Blue Harvest" episode. Justice League: New Frontier will win the 60 minutes or more animated Emmy category.
I rented it from the public library this past week, and enjoyed every minute of it.
