View Full Version : (OT): How did you spend your GAC "Down Time?"

The last day or so I've noticed that the GAC and ToonZone sites were down due to some trouble with the server, and no one could access it.
(P.S. I'm glad it's back on now. I didn't know the server was going through maintenance and was having trouble.)

During the "down time," I finished and put a new AMV on YouTube (and gathering clips for my next one), worked on touch-ups for some cartoons I want to send to a magazine, and got caught up on a few household chores (washing the dishes, changing bedsheets, etc.)

How'd everybody here spend their "Down Time?"

I went through some GAC related withdrawal, which proves how often I've been visiting this site lately!

I went out for a good dinner and drinks yesterday with my best pal from work and his family. It pays to get away from the keyboard for a change!

During the fourms downtime, a terrible thunderstorm came and a fierce lighting strucked my old computer and modem. My family had to get a new computer and modem not only for leisure time, but for work as well.

I remember back in the days when everyone had dial-up...those modems might as well have had targets painted on them with a sign saying "zap me!" My family was without internet for weeks due to that when I was in high school.

But anyway, the forums were down for maintenance this time. I survived.:sylvester

I spent most of my time arguing with the owner of the Agony Booth website.

I cried, and I cried, and I panicked, and cried some more...

Just kidding. I kept checking to see if it was back online, and looked at other websites. I also watched my Muppet Show: Season Three DVD set, and soem cartoons from my Looney Tunes: Golden Collection sets. I found and bought used copies of the Space Jam video game and Mickey Mouse in Blakc and White DVD, and played and watched those. I also watched some segmnets on the Sesame Street: Old School releases.

Oh, and I went to work.

At first I thought something was wrong with my computer, so I hit it a few times, in order to repair it. Then I realized the site was down, and I would periodically check back to see if it was up. Dejected and frustrated, I spent my time arguing on other blogs and reading about the history of Burlesque online, until GAC came back.

I posted new arts on my DA Page, checked out the blogs a few several times and spent at least two afternoons watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons on YouTube. Time well spent, really

I checked other websites, and I watched some of the Popeye Vol. 1 DVD set.

I panicked, then visited a bunch of other sites, went to visit friends, and then watched all the black and white cartoons on The Ub Iwerks Collection Vol. 1 and Woody Woodpecker Vol. 2

I (almost!) finished editing the soundtrack (and started the picture) on 'Doughnuts', a Tom and Jerry Cartoon. I've got 3 prints to work from, and (almost!) all the missing footage......

What happen to the GAC site - was it a virus attack? I don't see any thread from Jon that explains????? The GAC being down created havoc with my Mozilla browser so that I had to restart the browser which clears my cache. If the being done was to change things- would appreciate in the future warnings ahead of time:mad:!

Maybe I can explain this!

According to Toon Zone, it just went down for updates (related), and to quote them, loosely, "updates that took longer than needed."

Anyway, other than trying to get on it over and over again, I just tried to ignore it and went on my normal day, which is go on other sites and do my summer job on Fridays. Nothing special, other than getting a new dog named Pebbles (Yes, it's a Flintstones reference).

Geez, relax.

The server was just down for some routine updates. I knew it was coming, but didn't know exactly when or for how long.

Hey Jon, you mentioned you were going to back up the FTP server during the outages. Did you finish that?

I thought only Bill Gates products did really stupid, inconvenient things. But that doesn't happen with Explorer and I don't see why it'd be a default in any other browser.

Anyway, I did a pile of RL things, popped by Thad's blog and joined Barb watching the rest of the Snooper & Blabber cartoons. My favourite's the only one on the site with sound distortion. :(

I visited other sites of interest, worked on my classic TV Blog, and tried to spruce up my YouTube Page..(Finally figured out how to edit videos and post them to YouTube..Took me a couple years to find software easy enough to use for the purpose..)

I wrote a couple of portions of the script (and burned a few properly themed clips onto DVD-RW) for P.U.P. Toons Episode 3. :D

I don't think I am over reacting. If it were for a few hours OK but we are talking about a few days. Even today at circa 6AM NYC time. "http://forums.goldenagecartoons.com" was not to be found. Are we still playing update? Since most of the time, the home page was there - I would recommend on the home page information so we can "relax".

In my earlier post, I mention about my Mozilla Browser hanging up (Mozilla 1.6) I should laso have stated that I have still have Windows 95 (am I the only GAC member with this). I am sure that with a newer system and with FireFox I would not this problem. As a programer, I much prefer the Mozilla then IE. Many of my friends have switched to Firefox and are very happy.

I really don't think you're attitude is called for.

Look, I am sorry you had some browser trouble during the downtime. Believe me, if I had known it was going to take as long as it did I would have given some warning to you guys (even *I* didn't have any idea it'd take that long). I also didn't have any access to a computer with FTP access over the weekend to post an update to the main page. Toon Zone and GAC are hosted on the same server, and the detailed explanation of what happened was posted there (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=2910122&postcount=48).

I do want to thank everybody else for their patience during the downtime.

My brother named his dog Wilma just so he could yell her name! It's funny, when you tell people her name is Wilma, they just look at you wierd...they don't get the connection until you do the yell...Wiiillllmaaaa!!!! Then they finally get a chuckle.:D I don't think I will ever be able to come up with a better name for a dog than Wilma...my Daisy is just too common. (Yep, after the Bumstead's dog.)
