Every one that has been available for the last 30 years, that is. Technically speaking there are hundreds more PD cartoons currently lost even if they are mostly early, say pre-1930.

I have a 150 cartoon collection from Mills Creek, and I've seen at least one other compilation of 150 in stores. I'll admit, if I buy this set, I could probably throw away all of my other PD tapes and DVDs - although you can bet there will be lots of Mel-O-toons and Pied Piper crap, too...

Oh, I can't stand those last two series! The cartoons would seriously depress me as a little kid.
Don't throw away any cool 80s pd tapes!!

Agreed. I got a few pd tapes fro the early 90s and the picture quality is so much better than new bargain DVDs. I'm talking about Woody Woodpecker from 91 VHS tape the quality is like professional even though its pantry panic, Have you got any castles and Boy meets dog.

By the way, Millcreek doesn't release any PD Warner Bros. cartoons so save any of those tapes, which I also recommend you do not get rid of.

No, I'm not going to get rid of anything... My Millcreek 150 collection does have WB toons on it, although it heavily favours Van Beuren, Pied Piper and the same old Popeyes...

PDs were nicely done for the longest time. The first hackjob I ever bought was Wondertoons in a Fred's store at their grand opening.

The Mill Creek DVD's are a mixed bag...the picture and sound quality vary from film to film, and they look like they used VHS masters, because for example, "All's Fair at the Fair" on one of the 150 Cartoon Classics has visible tracking problems, as well as a "warpy" soundtrack. Other shorts have compression issues and will get minor blockiness at times. And by whose standard are "The New Three Stooges", the Pied Piper films and the Hoffnung films "classic"? But there are a lot of neat Famous Studios Screen Song films and Fleisher films on them, and 150 Cartoon Festival has a few silent Felixes, Oswalds and Alice Comedies. Not to mention one of these two discs has the GAC favorite, "The Enchanted Square" with Raggedy Ann (which is a cute little film).

Wonder where the Felixes, Oswalds and Alices were lifted from

How many times are they going to do this? First, Treeline (forerunner of Mill Creek) released their 100 Cartoon Classics set...which I thought was great quality for a PD collection (of course, a lot of the stuff on there was said to be lifted from old VHS releases originally compiled by someone right here on this forum). Then later on, as Mill Creek, they re-released a lot of the same cartoons (and more) as "150 Classic Cartoons" or something. Then they redid that set to replace all the Superman and WB cartoons with Betty Boops. Then they released another volume. Then they combined the two into one set. I guess they're trying to sell the same stuff over and over. (Remember how we were told if you saved one dollar and then doubled it every day -- never mind how you were supposed to keep doing that exponentially -- you'd be a millionaire in a few months? Doesn't quite generate the same results with public domain cartoons.)

I, too, would like to know the contents of this set -- particularly any "new" cartoons that haven't been going around. One thing I have to say, this is one company that does throw in a few surprises here and there...on one of their releases, they included a lot of Screen Songs no one else seems to be releasing. (And psssssst...not everything on their sets is necessarily PD either.)

I think this would replace about 70-85% of the PD cartoon DVDs I have.

Geezil

Well, at least there are those Alices, Calvin & the Colonel(s) and Hoppity Hooper(s) to liven up the mix ... though it's to be hoped that those last two titles might eventually emerge on other economically priced DVDs all their own. (How many more copies of, say, "The Talking Magpies" or any "New Three Stooges" titles could any GAcer need in this life, or on a shelf? )

Now, just a couple of questions for anybody who's actually started to watch the discs in this hernia-friendly set:

1) Are the "Calvin, etc." episodes in color, or in B&W?

2) What sort of condition are the numerous silent toons in? and

3) Didn't I see a couple of certifiably non-PD Popeyes mixed in there? (Never mind which ones.) ;)

Thanks.

looks like they're throwing everything at us but the kitchen sink...everything from obscure 30's cartoons to forgotten 60's TV stuff. (I'd never heard of "Wacky and Packy", a quick Youtube search brought forth unspeakable torture). I'd never heard of a DVD set with 600 cartoons before...and it looks like about 1/6 of them are worth owning. I'll pass!

(I'd never heard of "Wacky and Packy", a quick Youtube search brought forth unspeakable torture). The worst of it is that it's not even a bad idea (caveman and mammoth try to find jobs/food in modern times). But it breaks some kind of record for unattractive execution. The character design, the pacing, the animation, those voices, the music, the laugh track... it's just so painful. I forced myself to watch two episodes; I can imagine that some of it felt funny in script and storyboard stage, but then... (shudder!)

It would be nice if they issued those Hoppity Hooper cartoons as a seperate DVD set, but I imagine lumping them in with hundreds of PD cartoons keeps them below the radar of possible legal issues.

The Calvin and the Colonel episodes are black and white copies. I know this because the episodes listed are in circulation among cartoon collectors.

As far as I know, all the Calvins in collector's hands are in B&W (except one, "Polka Dot Bandit," but the B&W version is also in circulation)

"Wackey and Packey" was done by Filmation, so there's the problem. Speaking of which, "Wacky and Packy" (which I don't believe is in the public domain), was originally shown for the 1975 ABC's series, "Uncle Croc's Block". When the show tanked in the ratings and was cancelled, ABC told Filmation not make another show for them again and Filmation never did.

It would be nice if they issued those Hoppity Hooper cartoons as a separate DVD set

I have seen separate "dollar" dvds of Hoppity Hooper on eBay. But it's always from one of those unscrupulous sellers that wants $5.99 shipping for each disc!

It seems the retail "Dollar DVD" market dried up about last Christmas. That's the last time for any new Digiview product I've seen at my local Wal-Mart or any dollar stores.

I follow many sales of PD stuff online/ebay and there are many mouth watering dollar/PD titles to be had, but none are showing up in retail stores for now.

I’d avoided the 150 and 300 Cartoons sets. I thought I had almost every PD cartoon known to man via the individual Digiview “Cartoon Crazys” and other dollar DVDs released in the last 5 years or so. By a strange coincidence, right after discovering this thread a few weeks ago, I found the Mill Creek 150 Cartoon (UPC 683904505309/only $4.86 at Wal-Mart!) set at a yard sale and got it for just FIFTY CENTS! (I believe these titles all appear on the 300 and 600 title sets as well.) As I started viewing, I was pleasantly surprised to find some unseen goodies. (To my eyes, anyway…) -Dr. Mark
Here’s my track by track breakdown with (hopefully) correct notes.
150 CARTOON SET- Mill Creek DVD set on 4x DVDs.
Online comment: “MILL CREEK flashes their logo on-screen for several seconds midway through each short.” That is INCORRECT. It’s not “each” short. It just appears occasionally.
At Mill Creek online- it’s listed as 3 dvds, but mine is on 4.
For some reason, all the WARNER and SUPERMAN cartoons that were originally announced/ offered are substituted with BETTY BOOP and POPEYE titles.
I have noted this by//(Original announced title) replaced by://
Disc 1

1 Tuba Tooter (19??) Tom & Jerry- bw- Van Buren- full titles. Nice print.
2 Plane Dumb (19??) Tom & Jerry- bw- Van Buren
3 Redskin Blues (19??) Tom & Jerry- Gutlohn- OK print. Low sound.
4 Jolly Fish (19??) “A Dick And Larry Cartoon” but it’s Tom and Jerry.
5 Barnyard Bunk- Official Films present… “A Dick And Larry Cartoon”
6 Spanish Twist- Tom And Jerry

8 Along Came A Duck (1934) Official Films presents “A Tiny tot Cartoon”- BW print of a presumably COLOR cartoon. Opens with LIVE ACTION footage of children and ducks.
***I want to know MORE about these TINY TOT cartoons!!!*** The boy looks familiar. // From IMDB review: Well, this is different, and usually I like that but I can't give this animated classic short more than "fair" marks. The first two-and-a-half minutes of this cartoon is live action showing a little kid feeding ducks, then following one of the ducks who strayed to a nearby a pond. At that point, an animated frog appears, starts singing to the kid and then relays a story to him. The story is far more dramatic than it is humorous, about the frog reaching from underneath the water, tickling the stomach of duck swimming by, and accidentally causing the duck to almost drown. The frog then has to turn into Johnny Weissmuller and swim frantically to save the duck's life. Then he's a hero to everyone in that duck's family. It's actually pretty suspenseful and probably scary a very little kid. The film ends back with real-life footage with the frog saying, "If you don't believe me, ask him!" We a see big duck next to the kid, who then laughs. Wow, talk about dated. I might have made this sound better than it is, because it's not very good.
The following are dreadful TV cartoons. Similar to Mel-O-Toons with a live actor opening.
9 Story Of Ali Baba- MR. PIPER & THE STORY OF-
10 Magic Horn- MR. PIPER AND THE STORY OF…
11 Brave Molly- MR. PIPER AND THE STORY OF…

13 Kindhearted Girl- MR. PIPER AND THE STORY OF…
14 Three Sisters- MR. PIPER AND THE STORY OF…
15 Proud Princess- MR. PIPER AND THE STORY OF…
16 Sunshine Makers, The (193?) D: Ted Eshbaugh. Not a bad print of this CLASSIC favorite!
Slightly soft and some scratches. Presumably CINECOLOR? Movie Connections: Clips featured in the movie Get Crazy (1983) One shots don’t get much better than this. So don’t be a gloomy gus! // From IMDB: Psychedelic, Man!, 11 October 2007 7/10 Author: HippieRockChick from United States I remember seeing this cartoon on TV (Channel 13, an early 50's incarnation of PBS) here in NYC. I was four or five years old, and I thought it was totally cool. That channel also deserves the glory of running the Farmer Gray cartoons, my first exposure to classical music)---I heard a song that stayed in my head for twenty years, until I finally heard someone playing it and found out its name (the old English country dance tune known as "Sellenger's Round" or "The Beginning of the World"). Anyway, I saw "The Sunshine Makers" there, and then promptly forgot about it until I saw it on the light show screen at the Fillmore East, many years and some illicit substances later. Stoned, we loved it...I still do. SO extremely weird. There were other cartoons the Fillmore East ran, including one with Tommy Popski that was all about immigrants and their "funny" names. Hey, social conscience! Rocks.
17 You Can't Shoe Horsefly (19??) NTA- Paramount Color Classic- HUNKY AND SPUNKY.
18 It's Greek Life (19??) Rainbow Parade. Fine print.
19 Picnic Panic (1935) KOLOR KARTOONS presents “Picnic Panic” over a crisp bw image. Then cuts to full color live action and Cinecolor animation. Presumably another: “Official Films presents- A Tiny tot Cartoon” May feature MOLLY MOO COW. BW end credits too. (This same toon is on another DIGIVIEW dvd without the bw titles.) // From IMDB review: Wow, this is a curiosity piece more than anything else. It's 70 years old but looks even older! It's very primitive stuff, not good or very funny, but not terrible either. It's an odd mix of animation in that most of it is animation but a small part shows three actual little girls. The girls are watching and listening to three kettles or pots on the stove singing. When the latter stops, the girls are entertained by a story from the coffeepot. He tells them about a picnic they had one time, which is then illustrated. In the cartoon, you see all the little cups, saucers, salt and pepper shakers, etc., playing and having a good time. Some of the things are clever, as the cups filling themselves with water from a stream, or dishing out sugar, cream, etc. Then a cow comes by and interrupts the picnic by eating some of the food. All the cups, pots, etc., combine to use what they have to get rid of the cow. That's it. As I said, very primitive looking but it IS in color and it isn't stupid....but not something you'd watch a lot of times, either.
20 Cupid Gets His Man (!9??) Commonweatlth. Nice full color print!
21 Molly Moo Cow Robinson Crusoe- Nice color print. As are all Molly Moo Cow toons!
22 Scotty Finds Home- Gutlohn- good cinecolor print
23 Parrotville Post Office- Gutlohn- Pretty vivid for Cinecolor
24 Spinning Mice- MORE TINY TOTS live-action in COLOR. // From IMDB review: This is one of those old "Rainbow Parades" cartoons which mixes life-action with animation. It usually begins the story with a little kid doing something and then the animals in the story turn into animated figures. That's what happens here, too, as little boy puts some mice into a little girl's doll house. Then, the boy and girl watch the mice run around. That part is a kind of lame. All of sudden, we see an animated story about an old "wizard" who is mixing chemical formulas in his lab with the intent of "turning ugly into beauty" because "nature made too many ugly things." Yeah, right. Anyway, at least he can sing and he explains all these thoughts in song. They loved to sing in 1930s cartoons. His formula works, as we see lizards transformed to beautiful birds, frogs into cute chipmunks, etc. However, when something accidentally spills into the mix, the results are disastrous and the wizards learns you can't play God and "to leave well enough alone."
25 Parrotville Old Folks- Gutlohn- Cinecolor OK print.
26 Les Escargots- UNUSUAL, French cartoon. McGraw Hill films logo. Now who’s gonna complain when you’ve got the PREQUEL- of sorts- to FANTASTIC PLANET??? (Included

ccthemovieman: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur4445210/comments (CC The Movie Man likes to review modern forensic-type TV crime shows and also old cartoons!)
Takes You Back To '50s Sci-Fi Films, 7 August 2007 Author: ccthemovieman-1 from Lockport, NY, United States. This was an odd cartoon, for several reasons. It was in the middle of this DVD collection I bought of 1930s cartoons and this was made in 1965. It also is French. It also is more of a science-fiction story out of the 1950s, or even a horror story, much more than a comedy which one normally associations with cartoons. An "animated short" is a better description of this strange story. That story is about a farmer who is trying to grow lettuce. He has no luck until he discovers one day that his tears make the salad grow. He brings an onion with him and then hits himself our the head - whatever it takes to make him cry and produce these big heads of lettuce. The bad news is that snails invade these big vegetables and the snails turn out to be giants. They invade the nearby city and capture the humans, kids and adults. If this were a '50s film, you just know it would be called "Attack Of The Giant (or Killer) Snails!" These escargots (snails) even demolish the city's buildings! What happens after that is even more bizarre, but funny. I found the artwork strange, too: excellent in spots and primitive in others. Although I found it all interesting, I wasn't quite sure what to think as far as entertainment value. It's more of a curiosity piece. However, if the pace wasn't so slow, this could have been really good because the premise was good.
*_*_*
From the guys that did Fantastic Planet, one of the trippiest and most imaginative films ever conceived, is a short story of a man who needs help on his farm and puts some snails to work on the crops. In the morning, they're giant snails prowling the neighborhoods and frolicking with half-naked women. There isn't so much of a plot as much as it's just this situation told with a lot of wild enthusiasm and a kidding sense of science fiction fare from the 1950s. If you've seen the previous work of the director Lelaux (which sadly isn't very much, along with collaborator Toper), you know sort of what to expect, like a happy, wacky dream of delight and terror and fun. It's simply a wondrous effort, with the snails moving in a manner that isn't exactly fluid but not static, with lots of color but ragged like some underground comic book, and it's a riot when taking it in like some surreal experience out of a Lynch kid's book or a lost tale from the Maxx. I loved the style, the approach, everything about it basically. And if you're wondering if giant snails can make a big impact, then you haven't seen the rabbits! Highly recommended.

27 Henpecked Rooster (19??) Paramount Harvey- Herman the mouse. Ok
28 Mutt In A Rut (19??) Paramount Harvey- no logo. Ok print.

29 Story Of Time, The (19??) Puppetoon-like animation. // http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044077
This was nominated for an Oscar for best one-reel short subject. This striking short film is an exercise in visualizing the flow of time using only abstract patterns, images and sound to tell the story. There was an inferior version made with voice-over narration, which should be avoided.
(30 Notes To You) replaced by:
PUDGY in Ding dong doggie- low sound
(31 Mechanical Monsters) replaced by:
GRAMPY- The Candid Candidate- bright sound but soft print.

36 Shuteye Popeye (1952) Blue AAP- Fairly sharp and good color on this one.
37 Cheese Burglar (19??) HERMAN NTA- Harvey Noveltoon. Ok print.
38 Stupidstitious Cat (1951) Paramount Noveltoon- No cuts in titles. BUZZY. Another violent one. Buzzy kind of sounds like “Rochester” from The Jack Benny Show.

21 Crazytown (1953) Newer logo. Reddish. Harveytoons
22 Golden State, The (194?) SCREEN SONG / NTA- reddish
23 Winter Draws On (1948) NTA- Red LOGO / “Alabamy Bound” Screen Song
24 Shortnin' Bread (195?) NTA- Screen Song
25 Once Upon Time (193??) Produced By Audio Productions, Inc. This is a fairly crisp and clear presentation with good color and bright sound. The color scheme is almost psychedelic. Though from what I can find out, this is a 1970s RECOLOR (obvious) of a film that was an original COLOR film to begin with! Is that correct? Is the original available for view??? // Found this info at a you tube-type blog showing: “Today's redrawn, Cinderella, was originally a 1936 Techicolor cartoon called Once Upon A Time, produced by Audio Productions for Metropolitan Life Insurance. This cartoon features a charming original song, with music by Edwin E. Ludwig and words by Frank W. Speidell. This R&TVP cartoon is, IMHO, one of the worst-looking redrawns I've ever seen. Have fun spotting the mistakes when comparing it to the original.”

Well, now ... I started to mention the 600-toon set to Mrs. Geezil yesterday, and no sooner had I mentioned the part about the Hoppitys & Calvins, than she cut me off and exclaimed brightly, "Order it!" :D Review to follow once it gets here.

BTW, Half.com has some very good prices on this one.

Just sampled a little bit so far...

The Calvin And The Colonel shows are all B/W, but most have commercials! The majority are decent dubs from 16mm. A couple of them have been through a few generations of tape duping and it shows.

The Hoppity Hoopers also look kind of dupey, but fairly good. They are all in color and they include the individual cartoon intros (with the jazzy intro music and the abstract jumping frogs) and the end title. All have clean beginnings and ends, from what I've looked at. These are just the HH segments only -- no show opening/closing, interstitials or other cartoons.

Fleischer's Musical Memories is in color. Is this a big deal?

EDIT: I looked at some more of the set. Some of the Hoopers have the show's closing credits. This looks like it's mostly duped from that bootleg Hoppity Hooper set someone made from New York ABC showings, except two cartoons come from a 16mm film transfer -- whoever compiled these must have gotten their hands on just one Uncle Waldo half-hour.

I have a hoppity hopper DVD from eastwest company that only costs a dollar.

7 Piano Tooners- Tom And Jerry
8 Pencil Mania- Tom And Jerry

On my eastwest Tom and Jerry DVD the eight Tom and Jerrys are exactley the same but for the ninth cartoon there is a Burt Gillet Fable "Along Came a Duck" (1934) Now the original title of this series is Burt Gilletes Toddle Fables. I assume for re-isue it was renamed Tiny Tot, as Tom and Jerry turned into Dick and Larry and Cubby Bear into Browny Bear. There were only four of these cartoons made (All 1934) All for Van Bueren/RKO.
Note: All 8 Tom and Jerrys are from 1932.
Actually the contents listed above are disapointing. How come the WB cartoons were all replaced???

Similar problem for me. A small independent dollar store has eastwest DVDs is my biggest haul but now they too have stopped bringing anything new in. The Digiview batch were ones I got at Wal Mart and just a buck stores they too have ran out. Lets hope a new dollar company emerges or Digiview or eastwest will make new DVDs or reissue the older ones.

I note that there are a slew of "Colonel Bleep" cartoons on this set, and while some are typical public-domain quality, some others look and sound pretty good! Some of these shorts have "leaked out" on various PD releases (some of the segments in this set have the title cards "slowed down," and I am wondering if it was done to eliminate a superimposed "Alpha Video" logo in the corner) and on seeing them, my curiosity got the best of me and I looked up this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Bleep)about the series. Apparently, even early syndicated shows produced on film are not necessarily preserved carefully...can anyone fill me in on this? It says there were 104 cartoons produced (that sounds about right for a syndicated made-for-TV series), but apparently a good chunk of them are lost?

I note that a couple of the shorts have closing credits included, which look like they were produced on video (possibly for the early 1990s VHS release)?

I've been buying off air cartoons. They are pretty good copies and cheap. I got sets of Tex Avery, Woody woodpecker, Popeye (on it's way), etc. I've just ordered a number of Hanna Barbera sets.

Update: OK, call me crazy (moderator on duty turns toward assembled GACers and raises baton), but with some encouragement from a couple of parties who shall remain nameless for now ;) , I've just begun to work on a complete review of this set for the sharing here.

That's correct...all 12 discs.

And hopefully, at least some of the dangling questions above will be answered in the process.

To be continued!

What I usually find in Wal-Mart/Dollar Tree, etc..It seems as if there are dozens of copies of the same movies that nobody bought a year ago..And nothing new is being brought in..I never found Hoppity Hooper anywhere..

I'm under the impression that East/West only sells to stores in bulk, with certain "assortments" of specific titles grouped together. So it's a matter of which "assortment" a particular store in your area ordered. It can be quite frustrating...East/West is certainly an interesting company; you never know what you'll find on one of their discs, and there may be some interesting things "lurking" among the unlisted contents (Diver Dan, 8th Man, Colonel Bleep, etc.) Their quality is hit-or-miss though, and if they release something, I would not assume that means it's really public domain.

I picked up a slew and a half of their discs and I'm still trying to go through them and identify everything on them all...it's a nightmare.

Looking forward to it. With PD collections, I'm of a different nature than high-grade stuff like the LTGCs and Disney Treasures - I just want to see some of these things, regardless of quality. And if this thing really is as packed as it sounds, I can finally cut out half a shelf's worth of redundant PD releases.

I sent an e-mail to Mill Creek and they gave me the list of all the cartoons on the set:

I really appreciate the post of the full contents as reported by Mill Creek, since this finalized my decision to buy the set. I was disappointed to find out, however, that Fleischer's "Tears of an Onion" has apparently been pulled from the set despite its inclusion in the list. It does not appear on the listing on the back of the Volume 6 sleeve (or any other) and also is not found in the Volume 6 disc menu.

I would love to know if this is "hidden" somewhere else on the set, but I suspect they removed it for copyright reasons, as the sole non-PD Color Classic.

First I've noticed, the "Collector's Edition" is now on Amazon for pre-order, including full contents:

The Booklet might be nice, but I'm not sure this "Special Collector's" set is worth $39.99 when you can get the original set, still with all the cartoons, for $16.15 New..

BTW, Internet Archive has a lot of these same cartoons uploaded..On my Cleveland Classic Media Blog, I am featuring a "Calvin and the Colonel" episode in its original airing, including commercials, from the Archive. Originally Broadcast February 3, 1962..This will almost certainly be on the 600 Cartoon Set..

I wonder what the t-shirt looks like?

I might order that limited edition tin just to add the most definiteive public domain home video release ever compiled to my collection. This would surely get you through many lazy Sunday mornings! And frighteningly enough, the box set actually looks more professional than most of the official cartoon releases from Warner Bros!

[...]How come the WB cartoons were all replaced???

No doubt the handwriting appeared on the proverbial wall as soon as the WB PD cartoons began appearing, all newly spruced up, in the Looney Tunes Golden Collection sets. While that will likely never faze East West, all the other lowball players appear to have left that particular arena.

Old MacDonald Had A Farm???

I am anticipating your review, I just got through disc 6 myself, last night. I have been surprised at how much I didn't have, so far. I made it through the Screen Songs I hadn't seen since childhood, just barely, made it through the "New 3 Stooges" I hadn't yet seen (very much just barely, can't do that in one sitting), but I can't abide the Mr. Pipers. I don't think I've seen a whole one yet, on anybody's disc. I just can't do it.

BTW, I need to point out that "Is My Palm Read" is a redrawn, and the editted one at that (the good bits are gone, in other words). Looks like the same "color turned off" version that's on other discs of that ilk.

Got this mainly for the huge variety of PD stuff I didn't already have. Does anyone else have the problem that Disc 1 and 2 make a really weird noise (in the machine, not on the soundtrack) as they play?

Disc 3 is both very good and very odd almost in equal measure - and there's some stuff I haven't managed to get through without clicking on the 'next' button yet.

But all in all, for a snapshot this is a good set. But not as easy on the eye as LTGC 6!

For me it's disc 9 and another one that slips my mind...I actually HAVE gotten through the whole thing by now, albeit with some skipping like you mention, or else I wouldn't be physically able to type this!

I think some of the discs are slightly mis-shapen, at least when the ones I mentioned are in my computer DVD drive. I haven't noticed it so much in my standalone players.

I don't think it's a huge deal, and it didn't affect playback. I think they're just, well, "cheap" !

brant

PS--Also, "The Gay Gaucho" was listed on my set, but appears nowhere, but no big deal, as it's readily available elsewhere. What infuriated me, though, was no appearance of "Land of the Lost Jewels" anywhere, which would have enabled me to toss my old "Treasure Box" crappy DVD which came in a paper sleeve, which I'm keeping for that one cartoon!

This is a nice set to have, and the easiest and most convenient way to get some of this stuff (like the Calvin & The Colonel shows), though I wish some enterprising soul would do a decent set of the Hoppity Hooper/Uncle Waldo shows from 16mm film sources (failing Classic Media doing a professional set from the masters). Of course, after I sprung for it, now I see it at Wal-Mart for ten bucks. What I don't get though, what is so great about the "deluxe" version where it goes for three times the price? Today is payday and I wandered through Walmart and saw the 600 set, so I bought it for 10 bucks. Skimming through the discs, I came across Sheep Shape, a Blackie the Lamb cartoon I had never seen before. There's a squence very similar to Tex Avery's "Nightclub Girl" cartoons, with Blackie in drag singing and being sexy while the wolf is going nuts over her in a nightclub. While not as well done as Avery's stuff, the reaction gags are really funny; and the best bit comes when the wolf gets so turned on he turns into a rocket and soars upstairs into her dressing room - coming to a vibrating stop in mid-air while an eyeball appears on the rocket staring right at her "knee" for 2 seconds!

Great stuff!

The Calvin and the Colonel episodes in the DVD set has been in circulation for years through trading circles.

I wish somebody actually digs up the color copies of this show. Calvin was made in color but the show was taken off air before color television became mainstream, so not many people saw the show in color.

Until then these black and white copies are all we have.

Except for all the WB pd sets, which are included on the LTGC's. Some banned ones like "All this and Wabbitt Stew" and "Jungle Jitters" are worth the dollar, they are included on some Digiview sets. As a whole the 600 cartoon collection might be worth it for the rare "ALice" comedies.

I just got the DVD set today. I only checked out the "Calvin and the Colonel" episodes. There are eight, all black and white, and sourced from VHS tapes. Some fare better than others.

There are 10 episodes of "Calvin" available in trade circut. The ones not included in the DVD are "Cloakroom" (which I have on VHS tape) and "Calvin's Tax Problems." You can get those through ToonTracker.

Since there were 26 episodes of C&C, that's a good 1/3 of the series available in one form or another.

Perhaps they'll have to dip into the Fima Noveck/Flamingo cartoons if it came to that. A 900 set would sound reasonable if they can pull that off.

Bothering to go back and read through other posts here!

Good advice! Another cartoon from that show was "Fraidy Cat", which also gets thrown into these releases, though strangely the only other cartoon from Uncle Croc's block not to get used on these is "M.U.S.H."

And them's the conditions that prevail. Why? Because I found out entirely too much about piracy while working on the first half (and a very skeletal draft of the second) to go on condoning and trumpeting the existence of this set.

Sounds like a cop-out, true, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. (I've never heard of anyone who loves getting cease-and-desist letters, and I'm sure I courted at least a couple of those in the process.)

My boundless thanks go out to Jon Cooke for masterfully managing the graphics in the first half, for putting up with all of my notes about fine-tuning the text, and for his ongoing moral support while I was bolting through all those Mel-o-Toons, Hoffnungs, and godawfully distorted soundtracks on Fleischer Popeyes.

I'm also hoping Jon and GAC will eventually afford me the opportunity to review a much smaller and far more legitimate DVD set (though any reluctance there is 100% understandable).

And thanks, everybody, for reading and responding to what there was (without ever taking my head off for condoning and trumpeting...).

I understand your reasons, but may I compliment you on the style you used to write the review. It was fun to read and I hope to read that next review !!!

I envy those that gotten through those out-of-sync Hoffnungs! I could send you a legit copy of those anyway that are in sync myself to make up!

Gee, I'm a little dissapointed about this review not continuing but I can understand the problem.

I can't wait for your next review, though. I can pretty much guess what it's going to be about.:mighty:

Perhaps they'll have to dip into the Fima Noveck/Flamingo cartoons if it came to that. A 900 set would sound reasonable if they can pull that off.

Bothering to go back and read through other posts here!

Good advice! Another cartoon from that show was "Fraidy Cat", which also gets thrown into these releases, though strangely the only other cartoon from Uncle Croc's block not to get used on these is "M.U.S.H."

I'd rather sit through 1000 "Mel-O-Toons" than watch another episode of "Fraidy Cat" or "Wacky and Packy". I've never seen anything that awful before or (hopefully) since. Truly, truly terrible cartoons.

They all are!

To add to (my) confusion, I saw some $5 sets at Target today that are apparently just the "600 Cartoons" sets divided in half...I guess these same cartoons will be endlessly circulating on such collections until the end of time?

What got me was that each set had four episodes of "Calvin and the Colonel," and I was standing there wracking my brain trying to remember if the same episodes were on the 600...!

But they were. So, I just went and bought Superfriends and the Mighty Mouse New Adventures and went home. :)

I got the 600 set for only $10.00 at Wal-Mart.

Compared to $24.95 online, thats good.

(Just to mention, it's my 100th post)

Nice set of toons...However edited for some content compared to other releases. Mill Creek should have at least posted "cut/edited" content on box
