TV Shows on DVD and The Digital Bits are reporting that Universal plans Woody Woodpecker DVDs for sometime in 2005 (news links below). No other details available at this time.

On a side note, I am not really getting my hopes up until we get some more details. This could be a collection of 1990s Fox Kids Woody cartoons for all we know...

I'm honestly not expecting much since Universal is behind this but I'll refrain from further comment until details are posted. I would be the happiest man alive if I could safely retire my Columbia House dvd's, but I highly doubt that will happen soon. Can anyone really see Universal releasing complete and uncut prints from their Lantz library? I expect if anything, we might see an unorganized compilation of strictly Woody Woodpecker cartoons, more than likely the staple shorts but none of the one-shot or other character toons and more than likely in edited form. I sincerely hope I eat my words. We'll see...
Sweet. Maybe NBC Universal will make them the DVD like the Disney Treasures or Golden Collection. Woody is their most popular animated character that they own.

I just hope they use the LT Golden Collections for inspiration. I always loved the Lantz cartoons and still have lots of 8mm silent editions of them that were bought for me in the 1960's. I have to think that the success of other DVD cartoon sets is the reason for a move away from the Columbia House exclusive deal. Let's hope! I will make a habbit of keeping my fingers crossed until my cartoon dreams come true. hahahaHAha!:)

I would honestly be quite satisfied if it was just a repackaging of the Columbia House discs (Vol. 1-20) with unedited and possibly remastered prints in an elegant looking box-set. In fact, I'd be much more than satisfied. We'll see...

TVShowsOnDVD.com has been known to report news articles on classic theatrical cartoons as well, I believe the basis is that they would have to have recieved broadcast time at some point in syndicated packages like most studios have done with their shorts to warrant such information but they've reported on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection under the headlines, "The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show" (since they are a site dedicated to television series on DVD) so the fact that they've posted news about Woody is quite insignificant in determining what context we might eventually see.

I've got the stupid notion that this is going to be the new "Woody Woodpecker Show" (FOX-type) on DVD, because they have already been released last year in Japan, and right now networks don't really know what else to do with that series, except release it on DVD..... plus Japan's DVD market is usually used as a test release, to see if a product sells well over there.
My second bet would be that it's the CH set released to the public, which in itself, I guess, wouldn't be all that bad.
Like Oliver says, I hope I'm wrong.... but I severly don't forsee myself going out and buying the "Universal Cartoon Collection Vol. 10 featuring Oswald, Li'l Eightball, and the citizens of Lazy Town" anytime soon :p . http://members.rogers.com/kitty_face/images/WoodySmilie.gif
