looking for is either having problems or undergoing routine maintainence. You might try contacting one of the two mods for Cartoon Brew.
May this find you happy and healthy.

What's wrong with Cartoon Brew? You mean other than Amid sharing administrator duties with Jerry on it?

I would have done a spit take! Ha ha ha!!!!
What's with all the Amid hatred? He can be a little random at times, but he's a good guy and his writing is usually entertaining.

Because his incessant and elitist cartoon hatemongering is offputting and gets tedious after a while?

I have to agree. I finally gave up reading his posts about a year ago. I can't stand his snarky negativity. He hates anything that was made after 1960... except maybe Ren and Stimpy or independent shorts or something from another country.

Well that's a pretty good cut-off for quality animation (with exceptions). I'd have to agree with Amid on that one. Minus the independent shorts of course.

I also like Amid's writing on Cartoon Brew. I tend to agree with his assessments (then again, I'm also very opinionated). I don't get all the bashing towards him going on here.

The "bashing" is based on Amid's interest in 1950s design animation, which is largely Cubist based. Most people at this forum have an appreciation for the more illustrative style of the 1930s to the mid 1950s when "stylization" made its impact on cartoons. It's a subjective issue, as a lot of people do not understand or appreciate "Modern Art."

Well, I'm not too keen on the 'stylization' you speak of, but I certainly don't hold Amid in disdain for his love of it (because after all, he also loves the same kinds of cartoons I and others do). People seem to bash Amid because his writing of the modern animation industry is too snarky. But then again, we're talking about the modern animation industry, so isn't talking about it in a snarky manner the only honest manner?

"Snarky" What do you mean?
"Snarky" What do you mean?

And as the pot said to kettle, "You're black." That response was a bit curt, Thad. Is it necessary to throw the dictionary at someone? Indeed!

I didn't mean to be mean. I just copied and pasted the online dictionary's definition of it for those who may not know its meaning. (As the definition states, it's not exactly commonly used.)

I am aware of what the word means. Others may not. What I was hoping for was your observations of specific remarks from Amid that you take exception with. That would be more helpful, I beleive than simply making a broad statement.

I don't take exception with anything Amid writes (lately). Others do. Ask them.

Then you are taking back the "snarky" remark?

Amid's writing style is snarky. It can also be insightful. That's why I enjoy it.

I'm right here Thad. Bring it on, man.
No, on second thought, DON'T bring it on. You might have infinite free time to volley this back and forth, but that's time I'd rather not spend on something so anal.
I'll conced that Amid can be insightful AND sometimes funny, but most of the time, he's not. He's mostly simply grating and closed-mindedly dismissive (things John and Steve are frequently criticized for being ). And that's my last point to be made in this thread

I know you said that you've made your final point in this thread but the only question I'm going to ask is..... how is Thad (or anyone else who has commented in this thread for that matter) being anal? He's simply stating that HE personally isn't offended or distraught by anything Amid writes at CartoonBrew. He's not trying to attain an air of superiority or "holier-than-thou" attitude over anyone else at the forum; he's just simply giving his own personal point of view!
And, furthermore, I also didn't once get the notion or feeling that Thad was being "snarky" by giving a literal dictionary definition of the word "snarky". He was simply trying to define the word (which, as he himself said, is not a word which is THAT commonly used or heard all that often) as explicity and accurately as could be for those who didn't understand it. What's wrong with that? If anything, he was trying to be helpful, not "snarky".
I'm not trying to add fuel to anybody's "fire" here. I'm just trying to tone down any angst that might be stirring up here. I feel myself that there's far too much unneccessary hostility here. We're here to have fun, people. Could we try to? :)

Amid shouldn't have bashed Home Movies without having seen it. That's, like, rule 101 of film/TV criticism of something you just don't do.

The "angst" is in the mind of the beholder. This is a medium of discussion and clarification.

That's exactly what it was. I don't give a rat's ass how "snarky" Amid is. He'll do his thing, I'll do mine.
Yes, the Brew is back online. This post (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/site-news/cartoon-brew-server-upgrade) explained everything.

Glad to see the site's back. As for the Amid Amidi-bashing...I don't why anyone should be hostile about it. I like some of his posts, others I disagree with...but most of the time he talks about stuff for the independent/festival/experimental animation crowd that doesn't interest me, simply because I haven't seen most of the animation he's talking about.
As for his being "snarky" (is that the word of the day or what?) I do wonder why he has to rip into every Dreamworks animated movie ever made. I actually liked the first two Shrek movies and the first "Ice Age" wasn't half bad. But that's the nature of blogs...everyone has a different opinion.

Frankly, I don't get the Amid-bashing thing either. My original quip was also pretty snarky in it's own right.
and the first "Ice Age" wasn't half bad.
"Ice Age" was by Blue Sky Studios.

The book is HOW TO MAKE ANIMATED CARTOONS: THE HISTORY AND TECHNIQUE by Nat Falk (1941). Until then this and LES DESIGNES ANIME' by Lo Ducca (1940) in French were the only comprehensive books on the subject until the 1970s. The ART OF WALT DISNEY by Robert Field followed these, and focused largely on FANTASIA. Then in 1958 came the original THE ART OF ANIMATION by Bob Thomas. :mickey: The Falk book sparked my interest in Animation history 40 years ago and was probably the most valuable since the accounts were still fairly recent, although somewhat altered due to "publicity". :felix:
I also have a hard copy of the Falk book, although I do not have it with the original dust cover and autographs from Paul Terry. It is quite clear that the author was taken in by Terry, as there is a clear Terry bias, giving him credit for inventing a means of advancing the medium. :gandy: As anyone knows, that credit belonged to Max Fleischer who built his studio on this very principle.:betty:
The thing that is most interesting about the early history in this book is that some of the illustrations were taken from the documentary, "J. Stuart Blackton's March of the Movies." These include the image of the Egyptian Temple of Isis and Roget's Thaumatrope. This pre-motion picture history was explored in the DISNEYLAND episode, "The Story of the Animated Drawing."
Two years ago, in commemoration of the Centennial of American animation, I released a revised edition of BEFORE WALT, the premier entry in my Animation Anthologies series. Having come into a 35mm Nitrate print of the Blackton documentary, I was able to make use of the original sources of these images.
In the case of the Temple of Isis and the "persistence of vision" I chose to remake the sequence for several reasons. First, the original footage was in black and white. The second reason was that the animation in the doucmentary was confused and poorly executed.
Terry biases aside, this is a wonderful book for what it represents and worth more than the $78.00--a true bargin. All this said, what does all this have to do with "What's Wrong with Cartoon Brew"? My guess was that someone poured in the wrong ingredients and something blew up! CARTOON BLEW!

Plus my copy has the honor of having survived a hurricane according to the listing.

It was my fault for having to mention that (since someone over at the Brew had to link to that eBay listing and I just had to wait it out and bid at the last minute to get it). Just figured I reported that here. :D
