2007 has been the "best" year for classic cartoon releases on dvd, including Universal's dip into the dvd market with the classic Walter Lantz collection, Popeye finally arriving to dvd, as well as the usual slate of Looney Tunes and the Disney Treasures. So which dvd collection deserves to be the top classic toon dvd release of 2007 and to share your thoughts?

And 2008 looks to be another great year for us toonheads.;)

I had to put down the Woody Woodpecker collection, I love those 1940's Woody Woodpecker films. Here's my top three favorites for 07

1. Woody Woodpecker vol. 1
2. Popeye Vol. 1

On a very personal note, Ozzie comes in first with Popeye feverishly competing for the rank. :rabbit: :sailor:

The Looney Tunes Golden Collection will always be my #1.
Followed closely by Popeye, Woody, Droopy and Tom & Jerry.
I still need to see the Oswald set, but I'm sure it's awesome!

Looney Tunes Golden Collection 5
Woody Woodpecker 1 (only for the low-quality restoration with the additional use of DVNR or it would have been number 1 in my list)
Popeye 1
Oswald
Donald
Droopy (I include it because it's nice to have the non-Avery Droopy shorts in one official release)

Well, I have been waiting since the advent of home video for an authorized release of the Fleischer Popeye's - so how could I vote for anything else?

BTW Entertainment Weekly named the Popeye Golden Collection the # 2 overall DVD release of 2007.

The restored titles to the two-reelers, the bonus features (including a helping of Ko-Ko the Clown shorts), this really was an outstanding package.

I'd rank Thunderbean's "Little King" # 2, followed by Woody, then LTGC5.

Definitely Popeye. Looney Tunes Five ranks lower because it had some mediocre cartoons on it.

What he said.

Whew - what a year for cartoon home video releases! How could 2008 possibly match it? And yet...

1. LTGCv5 (keep 'em coming!)
2. Droopy (more Avery please)
3. Popeye (very deserving and a fine set, Popeye's just not a favorite of mine)
4. Woody (fun to see this released)
5. Oswald (I still can't find the complete Goofy for less than a fortune on eBay)
6. Tom and Jerry

Me, I had to go with the latest installment of the Disney Treasures and this wave was not supposed to be released this year.Another reason is that Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was given back to the Disney company and a new generation will be able to see these wonderful shorts, as well as volume three of Donald.

The runner up would the the first offical dvd release of the classic Walter Lantz cartoons, as we all knew that Popeye would make it to dvd one day, but no one knew or saw it coming, that Universal would finally release their own animated library and we'll get a second volume of Lantz shorts in April of next year.Although the latest volume of Looney Tunes has a great selection, but until Warner Home Video shows some guts and releases the censored 11 on future volumes, then the other dvd collections(Woody Woodpecker, Popeye, Disney Treasures)will stil rank ahead of the LTGC, in terms of released PIC material.

Another vote for Popeye!

It was an amazing year for classic cartoons on DVD. I can't wait to see what we'll get in 2008!
