Anyway - I assume the point was to make a list of American DVDs that includes MGM toons, but I'll mention this anyway:

The Tom & Jerrys (Jerries?) directed by Deitch and Jones has been released on DVD in Europe, and if you have a region free player, capable of playing PAL discs, they can be bought from shops like play.com or amazon.co.uk

This series isn't particularly good - the toons aren't restored and it seems to be pretty random if a cartoon is cut or not. It seems like they're put together by someone without any real knowledge of the series. Anyway - as far as I know, there are no cuts in the cartoons from Deitch or Jones, and all of them has a fairly decent picture, so these two discs are well worth their £5 ($10) price tag.

Yeah the UK discs aren't perfect but at least the two T&J cartoons that aren't available on R1 are included uncut with the original Mammy voice on Mouse Cleaning.

Thanks for the effort that went into compiling this list.

It just made me wish there was an M-G-M Golden Collection somewhere on the DVD horizon as buying all of the movie DVDs to get the cartoons I want is just too cost prohibitive!

I just updated the list adding the Celebrity Pictures cartoons (Flip The Frog & Willie Whopper) which were distributed by MGM before they started their own studio...the movie posters even said MGM Presents Flip The Frog or somethign like that...also updated the list to reflect the Warner Bros. Academy Awards Animation Collection...enjoy!!!

Thank you for performing this valuable service to the cartoon community. I do have one request. In places where a cartoon is available on more than one DVD (such as with "The Milky Way"), could you leave both places where it's available?

Also, those double DVDs of MGM Musicals I believe are now out-of-print. However, WBHV is re-relasing them in a boxed set next month titled Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory, Vol. 3 (Hit the Deck/Deep in My Heart/Kismet/Nancy Goes to Rio/Two Weeks with Love/Broadway Melody of 1936/Broadway Melody of 1938/Born to Dance/Lady Be Good) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0011FDVEK/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance). All these DVDs will contain the MGM cartoons they carried in their original release.

I'm betting that the Chuck Jones :tomcat: and :jerry: shorts will not be released in the states anytime soon.

Doesn't seem likely.... but if you are looking for a region-free DVD player, while you're at it, see if you can find the Japanese boxed set of 10 DVDs of MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons.... although the H-B ones on there are redubbed and some are censored, you will find ALL the Jones T&Js which have been remastered, beautifully I might add, with NO DVNR or time compression issues. They look amazing.

Thanks so much for this list, biach- we should also maybe make a note which cartoons released with the DVDs sets are censored as well.... several are, unfortunately... :(

if we could find a place on the net to keep this info then we could list the mutliple places the cartoons are available and explain the difference between the two versions (usually the LTGC versions feature commentary, restored title cards, music only tracks, pencil tests, etc. that make them more desirable)...

also I don't really notice when cartoons are censored since I'm 28 years old and my memory of many of these cartoons dates back to Nickelodeon or the early days of Cartoon Network (or further back to when i was much smaller)...I do however know how to spot the dreaded DVNR...

also I don't buy all the box sets (not a fan of musicals!) so while I do own many of them (Gangsters Collection, Thin Man, Marx Bros., Bogart, Cagney, Flynn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and more) I don't buy them for the cartoons alone; I am a fan of the actors...

it would make sene to list the multiple versions available in case someone has been looking for a specific cartoon ("Daffy Doodles" is a favorite of mine) and can't afford to buy a LTGC, but a $15-20 DVD might fit into their budget...

one other thing I've considered doing...previously all WB boxsets included separate dvd cases for each movie, even when the movie was available only the box set...for some reason (I think because people were selling off individual titles on the internet), they've gone to the gatefold digipak cases for many of the recent sets (Joan Crawford Vol. 2, Myrna Loy/William Powell Collection)...so many of these titles can be purchased separately on the internet, but they will lack the DVD keepcase...so it'd be worth noting which titles are only available by purchasing the box sets...

I don't have time to do this myself (I work graveyards, and have a one-year-old son) but if someone knows of a way to keep all this info online somewhere I'd gladly contribute my share...
