View Full Version : Help in identifying a mystery cartoon?

Being the "resident expert" on animation (at least in my family), my brother-in-law posed this question to me:

In the 1960's, & very early 70's, we would go to the drive in theater and the cartoons shown prior to the movie were sometimes quite good. There was one with 2 lazy mexican bandits with big sombreros and I believe gun belts (not speedy gonzales) that was hilarious, but nowadays would be considered very politically incorrect. Sound familiar? I'd like to know the name of the cartoon & characters, so as to look for it on the web.

Anyone? Bueller?

And Merry Christmas to all! And if you celebrate or observe something else, Merry that!

Probably you mean DePatie Freleng´s TIJUANA TOADS. They were Mexican and wore big sombreros, but weren´t bandits nor had any gunbelts.

That was my first response too, but he said...
Definitely not the tijuana toads. They were "people", and quite funny. My mom recalls 'em too, but we can't remember what the name of the cartoon(s) were.

Beyond that, I am drawing a blank. (Or is that blanc?) Now I'm trying to think, who was still doing theatrical cartoons then, that someone would have seen in a theatre? (Off the top of my head, Warner Bros., DePatie-Freleng and Walter Lantz.) But nothing is ringing a bell.

If these were new cartoons, there were only two companies producing new theatrical cartoons, Walter Lantz Productions, and DePatie-Freleng. A description of the style might help identify the mystery cartoon.

well I believe there were also commercial independants producing cheap animation interstitials and such specifically for matinee theaters and drive-ins in the '60s, no? and warner bros would've still been turning out theatricals into '64... in fact the very last LT produced, fitting the "Mexican" theme of the short in question.

it sounds like something Hawley Pratt might've been responsible for, but of course it could've simply been the case of the cinema running packages of earlier theatrical shorts.

Of course, none of this is helpful to the initial question...
