Well, after telling nearly everyone that I would be suspending my Internet
service this month, it turns out that I won't. I called TruVista this morning,
and, unlike the dial-up service that I had before, with DSL (which is the
service they offer now) there is a contract involved and an early termination
fee of $200, if you suspend it within less than two years (I've only had it four
months).

I ran into a similar obstacle when I tried to cancel my home security system.
That contract requires an early termination fee of $400, if I cancel it
before October 2008.

So, my online service won't be interrupted after all. I'll just have to try to keep
up the monthly payments somehow, because I sure can't afford to pay $200.
Life can sure get complicated, huh?

That's silly. You're so poor that you can't stop spending money because it will cost you too much. We feel for you, Dell Comics Fan, and many of us have been in a similar situation. We all have our ups and downs, but at least now you have the opportunity to perhaps get a better job than the one you just had. This time next year you might even forget that your predicament even happened. Good luck in the new year!

Or, as Marie Osmond aptly phrased it: "If you're going to be able to look back on something and laugh about it, you might as well laugh about it now."

I love the age of the "two year contract." People just don't understand why I have a pay as you go cell phone and don't upgrade my satellite to a dvr. That is why. Who knows what the heck is going to happen in two years? ONE year is fair, why do all these companies have to push it?

These past 8 months have been hard at our household moneywise as well. My DH lost a long time job, took a course to get his Class A drivers license and is now working...but is making 1/3 of what he made at the old job. Being on the town's fire department is keeping him from getting an over the road driving job, but, being the beer man for now is working. It is best for the long run for him to keep on the FD for 4 more years (retirement money!) so we will keep squeezing the pennies until then.

May I suggest you speak to a supervisor or manager at these companies? Sometimes you will find the right person that can either waive the fee or decrease it for you...you have nothing to lose by asking and only money to gain! Good luck!
