Someone is auctioning off on eBay a cel of the original ending for the Huckleberry Hound Show with the Kelloggs rooster. The cel is definitely in color which proves Daws Butler JR's theory that the original opens and closes were shot in color and that they exist somewhere. I am flat broke until the 15th of the month but, boy, I'd love to bid on this thing. Good luck to someone. Here is a link to the item up for bid:

Just because the cel is in colour doesn't mean it was shot in colour.
But if DB Jr. says they were, that's good enough for me.

I thought about that point after I posted the thread. However, the bigger thrill for me is to see first hand the color shots of the original Huck closing credits. It is the first time in fifty years that the colors for that production shot have been shown. I was so excited about that point that I didn't think through what I was actually posting.

For what it's worth...I was in the now-gone "Viacom Store" on Michigan Avenue in Chicago about 10 years ago or so, and on the wall they had a framed cel from a Yogi Bear Kellogg's commercial...and the artwork itself was black and white.
I'd say the existence of the cel is good enough evidence that the closing was shot in color...however, proving "that they exist somewhere" is an entirely different matter. I hope they do (and that we get to see them someday), though.
But just the fact that we know interstitials featuring the rooster exist in color would strongly suggest that the original titles were shot in color too.
Evidently the early commercials were shot in B&W, though.
I think it comes down to what the expected "shelf life" of these segments was assumed to be at the time. A commercial would be repeated for a shorter length of time than the interstitials and title sequences, so they probably felt no need to spend the extra money to film them in color.

This is interesting in that the original opening was made in 1958, not 1962.

I think the seller just has his dates wrong.
I believe that the existence of this cel and the color interstitials is proof that the opening and closing were made in color. Whether they still exist in color is another story, but I suspect they are buried somewhere in the vault. Everyone at Turner (when they owned the library) told me that the "Rise and Shine" color opening of the Flintstones didn't exist... until I found it. I think this is the same case.

So what's it like in the vault? Can you describe it? I picture rows and rows of shelves with reels of film side by side, like books in a library. How are the films categorized? How big is the vault? Is it climate controlled? Was this the original HB vault, or part of something bigger? Any photos?
I think the whole thing is fascinating. And it's amazing that so many things seem to get lost in the vaults.

I get the impression the reels are either unlabled or they have labels that have fallen off over time (and probably marked with a Sharpie), but that's my opinion!

I see a big room with lots of boxes and everything being unlabeled. I envision people sifting through box after box trying to figure out what everything is.
When the studio was on Cahuenga Blvd., I think it was catalogued well. Now, I'm not so sure.

I hope it's in better shape than my back storage room was when I moved a couple of months ago. (That's pretty scary.) But from stuff I've read, I have my doubts.;)
