Since it's Halloween and since I heard John Zacherle's 1958 novelty hit "Dinner with Drac" on Bill Kelly's Sunday radio program "Teenage Wasteland" on WFMU, I decided to look up Zac's biography on Wikipedia. "The Cool Ghoul" was a TV host of horror movies in Philadelphia and in New York City. I best remember him as a DJ on WNEW-FM and later WPLJ. He's still with us at 89.

His Wikipedia biography says that in 1963 he hosted cartoons on WPIX-TV in New York. I remember "Officer" Joe Bolton hosting Three Stooges shorts and "Captain" Jack McCarthy hosting Popeye cartoons, both on WPIX. I also remember Claude Kirchner hosting Terrytoons on WOR-TV. But I don't remember Zacherle hosting cartoons. Does anybody know what cartoons he hosted?

The only thing I really remember Zacherle from on WPIX is "Chiller Theater" on Saturday nights. Aside from Bolton and McCarthy, WPIX in 1963 had Chuck McCann hosting the Laurel & Hardy shorts and the Fleischer Superman cartoons, and "The Merry Mailman" Ray Heatherton (Joey Heatherton's dad) hosting some of the cheap made-for-TV cartoons like the Mel-O-Toons and The Mighty Hercules mid-mornings on Ch. 11, before The Rocky Show.

WPIX also ran the KFS Beetle Bailey, Krazy Kat and Snuffy Smith cartoons starting in '63, and had all the Hanna-Barbera syndicateds, including Huck, Yogi, Quick Draw and the "new" H-B show with Wally Gator, Lippy the Lion and Touche Turtle, along with The Woody Woodpecker Show, but IIRC, none of those cartoons had a show host (except for Woody's boss, Walter Lantz, of course).

Nuts and a half! I'll be out of the house for the first half hour-45 minutes. And I liked that guy a whole lot. :(

I'm listening to the Cool Ghoul now!
