Yes, as the CN and Nick universes continue to rot from within, don't forget that there's yet one beacon of optimism for classic animated shorts. Rally early and often around 1 Animation Network ... and give 'em all our positive suggestions & support! After all, this channel just might come to a cable system or satellite outfit near you, sooner than you think.

Also see Jerry Beck's Cartoon Brew site (if you haven't already done so) for more ongoing details, and thank you kindly, Mr. Beck!! :D

According to the website, 1AN would being its broadcast in early 2005. That's about a third away. I don't know how many people can wait that long. :(

On the other hand, one of its broadcast outlets is DirecTV. I have DirecTV. That earns 1AN a WOOT! :D

Not too many details so far, but it might be worth holding onto DirecTV a little while longer!:beepbeep:

I have my hopes here (especially since I'm in the Chicago area and have Comcast), but everything on their website hints to me that they are looking for modern, international and flashy animation and not classic animation. Jerry Beck's site does mention it slightly by saying:

They hope to fill the animation void left by Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney and program independent, international, adult-skewing and classic animation.
I have my fingers crossed regardless.

Sounds like they're just gonna run a random playlist of things...

I'm a Comcast subscriber and it says "basic cable" so hopefully Comcast is not a pack of idiots and they'll actually PUT it on BASIC CABLE.

Of course, the first thing we need to know before asking if it will be a basic cable channel is which areas with Comcast cable will be getting it when it premieres in Jan. 2005.

According to the web site, they intend to show animation that no one else shows. In my mind that includes classic cartoons and also other material.

Personally, I would like to see material similar to what was shown on the PBS show "International Animation Festival" from a number of years ago, especially the stuff that came out of the studio in Zagreb (then Yugoslavia, now Croatia). I believe I saw "The Cat Came Back" (the Canadian cartoon, not the WB one) and the immortal "Bambi Meets Godzilla" on this show.

I would be happy with a mixture of classic cartoons and this type of stuff. I'm not optimistic that my cable company (Cablevi$ion) would carry it.

But I think it's safe to say that they won't have the rights to show WB or Disney stuff :(

But I think it's safe to say that they won't have the rights to show WB or Disney stuff :((Or MGM stuff, for that matter. :( :( ) So true, Jeff. But then, if they can land the rights to sizable chunks of everything else, I'd call that a fair trade-off!!
